NYT Pips hints, answers for August 17, 2026
Welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalogue.Released in August 2025, Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move on to the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level. How to play PipsIf you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

Wordle today: Answer, hints for August 17, 2026
The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space. Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips. Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number. If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

Where did Wordle come from?Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once. Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing. What's the best Wordle starting word? The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.What happened to the Wordle archive? The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it, but it was later taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times. However, the New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archive, available only to NYT Games subscribers. Is Wordle getting harder? It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn't any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle's Hard Mode if you're after more of a challenge, though.

Tesla Model Y gets adapter for charging other gadgets
Tesla is an electric vehicle pioneer in many ways, but one fairly pedestrian option was missing from its cars — until now. The company recently started selling an optional vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter for its Model Y Premium and Performance trims in the U.S. With this $80 adapter, the car can be used for charging other gadgets, such as phones, laptops and the like.

The company didn't announce the change anywhere, but the adapter started showing up in the configurator for Model Y. The specs, per Tesla's website, are as follows: The 120V, 20A adapter has 2.4kW maximum power and can be used to power devices like "lights and laptops."The adapter can also be bought separately for $80. To use it, you need to have Tesla's Gen 3 Mobile Connector.
Tesla Outlet Adapter can also be purchased separately for $80.

Other car companies, including Ford and Hyundai, have been selling V2L adapters for their own cars for a while, but Tesla has taken its time with it, even though the underlying functionality was (probably) there. For some reason, the non-Premium Model Y trims don't offer the adapter as an option, and none of the Model 3 variants have it, either. Vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality isn't available on any of the Model Y or Model 3 variants. The Cybertruck, currently the most luxurious car in Tesla's lineup, offers both the V2L adapter and V2H functionality, with the "Universal Home Charger and Gateway," necessary to power your home via the Cybertruck, priced at $1,970.Want more tech and digital culture news delivered to your inbox daily or sent straight to your device? This robot vacuum has a thin design, with a 2.85-inch profile. This means it can clean underneath furniture that you may not be able to reach with a standard vacuum or sweeping brush. It also has great battery life, promising up to 100 minutes on hardwood floors. It also has BoostIQ Technology that automatically adjusts the suction power within 1.5 seconds depending on the surface. To help it avoid obstacles, it uses an infrared sensor to navigate, plus it has drop-sensing technology that helps prevent falls. Once it's done cleaning, the robot will automatically return to its charging base when needed. It also features an anti-scratch tempered glass top cover and a single-side brush designed to prevent scattering while maintaining suction power. Get this robot vacuum deal at Amazon now.

The Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni robot vacuum and mop just dropped to its lowest-ever price — but the clock's ticking on this offer. As of Aug. 17, Amazon has it marked down to $479, a 26% discount off its $649.99 list price. The deal expires in less than 24 hours, so if your floors have been begging for an upgrade, now's the time to grab it.The T80S Omni delivers 24,800Pa of suction, strong enough to lift dust, pet hair, and debris from carpets and hard floors in a single pass, without you having to go back over problem spots. On the mopping side, the roller mop cleans itself in real-time as it works, so it's always scrubbing with fresh water instead of pushing dirty water around as a lot of mopping robots do.

Robot vacuums just got the FCC drone treatment. How are robot vacuum brands responding to the ban?
It's also smart about surface changes, thanks to what Ecovacs calls its Triple Lift System. When it senses liquid or hits a carpet, it automatically lifts the brushes and switches to mop-only mode — and on rugs, the roller lifts up to 0.6 inches so even thicker fibers stay dry. The roller mop extends outward to hug baseboards and furniture legs, so you're not left with a dusty outline most robot vacuums leave behind along the walls. For pet owners, the anti-tangle brush keeps hair from wrapping around the roller as it spins, so you're not stopping mid-clean to pull hair out by hand. And since this is the Omni version, it comes with a hands-free station that handles self-emptying and self-cleaning, so day-to-day upkeep is mostly just letting it run.The floors handle themselves now. Grab the Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni robot vacuum and mop at Amazon before the deal ends.
Moon phase today: What the Moon will look like on August 17
The Moon is starting to reappear more each night as we work through the lunar cycle. We're still in the waxing Crescent phase, which means the illuminated portion is growing a little more each night. What is today’s Moon phase? As of Monday, Aug. 17, NASA's Daily Moon Guide tracker tells us the Moon phase is in Waxing Crescent phase, with 24% of its surface visible. Without any visual aids, tonight you can see the Mares Crisium and Fecunditatis. With binoculars or a telescope you'll also be able to see the Endymion Crater. When is the next Full Moon? The next Full Moon will take place on August 28.What are Moon phases? The Moon doesn't look the same from Earth every night. As it travels around our planet, it moves through a lunar cycle that takes roughly 29.5 days to complete, according to NASA. The changing positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon affect how much of the Moon's sunlit side we can see, creating the different phases. Over the course of the cycle, the Moon progresses from a narrow crescent to a half Moon and eventually a Full Moon, before starting the sequence over again. The eight phases are:New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

Lets talk about Lanterns shocking episode 1 death
HBO might as well change the name of Lanterns to Lantern, because by the end of its very first episode, only one of its Green Lanterns is still alive.
SEE ALSO:
'Lanterns' review: Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre shine bright in DC's sci-fi mystery
The series kicks off in 2016, with Earth's Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) investigating a shooting in Rushville, Nebraska. In the episode's final moments Lanterns flashes ahead to 2026. In the present-day timeline, John returns to Rushville, alone, and reunites with Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald). She brings him to the football field where the Rushville shooting took place and shows him that Hal is sitting in the stands... with a gunshot wound to the head. That's right: Lanterns kills Hal Jordan, iconic Green Lantern, right out the gate. Here's what that means for the rest of the show, and how we could see him again. Is Hal Jordan out of Lanterns for good?
Kyle Chandler in "Lanterns."
Credit: John Johnson / HBO Max
Here's the good news: Audiences haven't seen the last of Hal in Lanterns. The show's trailer is full of footage of Hal that we don't get to see in episode 1, including him visiting his old mentor Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) in prison. That means a good chunk of the rest of the season will take place in 2016, with Hal and John still trying to solve the murder. Whether the show will alternate between the two timelines or simply advance in chronological order remains to be seen. There could be a way to still see Hal, even in death. John learns this in episode 1, when he speaks to a younger version of Hal whose consciousness was uploaded to his Power Ring, then given a little extra boost of sentience by the ring itself. As this version of Hal tells John, Lanterns should be backing up these iterations of themselves weekly, a duty Hal has clearly let fall to the wayside over the last 10 years.Even though Hal hasn't been backing himself up, this copy of him still exists. That means it would still exist in 2026, and John could access it as he tries to solve Hal's own murder mystery. But there's just one small hitch in that plan. Hal isn't wearing his ring when John and Kerry find his body. Where could it be?Based on Superman, we know that Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) is now Earth's Green Lantern. While he and Hal have different rings, maybe he would know where to find Hal's. Fillion is confirmed to star in Lanterns, so he'll be figuring into the story at some point, likely in the present when he is a Lantern himself. However, Gardner's status as Lantern raises more fascinating questions about John and Hal (pre-death, that is). If both of them were alive between 2016 and 2026, why isn't one of them Earth's Green Lantern? What happened in these 10 years to make the Green Lantern Corps pass the title onto Gardner? And of course, the most pressing question of all: Who killed Hal?Lanterns is now streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes premiering Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
