Key Takeaways The continent of Africa covers 11.7 million mi² (30.4 million km²), roughly equal to the size of 30 countries. These 30 include some of the world’s largest countries like the (contiguous) U.S., China, and India. However, the most common map projection, called the Mercator projection, makes Africa it appear smaller than actually is. The African Union has urged governments to not use it anymore as it gives the impression that Africa is “marginal” on the world stage. For reference, Africa is the second-largest continent, both by size and population (1.6 billion people). Africa is vast. So vast that its full scale can be hard to grasp by looking at most world maps. The graphic above solves this by combining individual countries inside the continent’s area, showing that Africa’s landmass is on par with the (contiguous) U.S., China, India, and much of Western Europe combined. Data for this visualization comes from UN Statistics Division and total area (land + inland waters) was used for this comparison. Africa’s Area in Raw Numbers At 11.7 million mi² (30.4 million km²), Africa is the world’s second-largest continent after Asia. Put another way, it easily contains the contiguous U.S. (3.1M mi² / 8.1M km²) and China (3.7M mi² / 9.6M km² ) with room to spare. In fact, it takes a total of 30 countries together—shown in the graphic above —to equal Africa’s total area, underscoring how massive the continent is in absolute terms. Of course, country selection can change these numbers. If prioritizing Central and South American countries instead (like Mexico and Argentina,) the comparison could reduce to 18 entities. Including Alaska and Hawaii would increase America’s footprint by 700,000 mi² (1.8M km²). Why Your Wall Map Gets Africa Wrong Many of us grew up looking at wall maps that use the Mercator projection. This 16th-century design keeps straight lines for navigation but dramatically enlarges regions near the poles and compresses those near the equator. Africa, which straddles the equator, is one of the biggest victims of this distortion. Related: On a Mercator map, Greenland can appear almost as large as Africa. In reality, Africa is 14x bigger. That discrepancy fuels common misconceptions about just how expansive Africa really is. African Union Calls For Equal Projections Map The African Union has asked international organizations to stop using the Mercator projection. They say this size misrepresentation undermines the perceived global influence and importance of Africa and perpetuates stereotypes. For example, the frequent use of the Mercator map in educational settings and media can lead many to unconsciously imagine Europe and North America as disproportionately significant. Meanwhile Africa appears less substantial and “marginal.” The map above also drives home another point. When discussing global development, trade, or climate impacts, treating Africa as a single bloc overlooks the continent’s enormous spatial and cultural complexity. Brazil ranks second, where an iPhone costs $1,835—about 70% more than in the U.S. As in Türkiye, import tariffs and multiple taxes push prices sharply upward. In Europe, Sweden faces the highest iPhone costs, while Switzerland enjoys the lowest. The gap between them in 2025 is $218, with taxes once again accounting for much of the difference. Meanwhile, South Korea stands as the sole outlier, where iPhones are actually 1% cheaper than in the U.S., coming in at $1,063. Today, India has dropped to 2.0, while China has fallen even further to just 1.0. China’s decline is among the steepest globally, accelerated by its one-child policy (1979–2015) and now by economic and social pressures. These trends raise concerns about shrinking workforces and rising dependency ratios. America Remains Below Replacement-Level Fertility Following a steep decline throughout the 60s and 70s, America’s fertility rate has hovered slightly below the replacement-level fertility rate for many decades. This decline is due to a mix of social and economic changes: More women entering higher education and the labor force Postponed marriages and childbearing Rising costs of housing, childcare, and education Evolving personal preferences that prioritize career, flexibility, or fewer children. The U.S. Power Grid The U.S. power grid consists of a vast network of transmission and distribution lines that link electricity providers directly to consumers. In the continental U.S., this grid operates through three main systems: the Eastern Interconnect, the Western Interconnect, and the Texas Interconnect. Engineers built much of the system in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it urgently needs upgrades. Although the government has made improvements, the aging infrastructure struggles to keep pace with rising electricity demand. According to energy.gov, 70% of transmission lines are more than 25 years old. As a result, they are nearing the end of their typical lifecycle. The ASCE’s 2025 infrastructure report card warns that the U.S. must increase distribution transformer capacity by 160%–250% by 2050 to meet projected needs. Yet supply chain bottlenecks continue to hinder the country’s ability to add transformers to the grid. Power Disruptions by State Deteriorating infrastructure has made power disruptions and outages increasingly common. From 2023 to 2024, the average U.S. electricity customer experienced more downtime, with outage hours rising from 7.7 to 10.6. This is a 38% jump in just one year. From small local airstrips to major international hubs, it has three times as many airports as second-place Brazil. China’s Airport Count Remains Relatively Low Given China’s large population and geographical area, it’s airport count (552 airports) is surprisingly low. This is likely due to the country’s focus on high-speed rail. As of 2023, China’s network had reached 45,000 kilometers (28,000 miles). These rails make up many regional and intercity routes that would otherwise be served via short-haul flights. Another point to consider is that China’s population is heavily concentrated in its eastern provinces, while countries like the U.S. and Brazil are more sparsely populated across many areas. Additionally, some U.S. refineries are located closer to foreign markets than to domestic demand centers. The Volcker Era and Double-Digit Rates The early 1980s marked the most dramatic spike in interest rates. With inflation climbing into double digits but economic growth slowing (also known as stagflation), the Fed pushed rates above 19%, triggering a recession but eventually restoring price stability. This remains the highest point in the modern history of U.S. interest rates, and is known as the “Volcker Shock”: when Federal Reserve Chair Paul Volcker broke the back of rising inflation. The 2008 Financial Crisis and Pandemic Era’s Near-Zero Rates In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the Fed slashed the interest rate to almost zero. By December 2008, the effective Federal Funds Rate had fallen to the lowest positive range of 0.00–0.25%. This was the start of a prolonged period of ultra-low interest rates that lasted nearly a decade. While the Federal Reserve had engaged in raising the interest rate back up from late 2015 to 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Fed to return to near-zero rates. During this stretch, the interest rate was slashed to the 0.00–0.25% target range to provide liquidity and a more supportive economic environment amidst an unprecedented global shutdown. Not long after, the interest rate was rapidly raised in 2022–2023 to a high range of 5.25–5.50% to combat the sharpest surge in inflation in 40 years. Every time an AI answers a query—a process called inference—it requires graphics processing unit (GPU) power, adding significantly to energy demand.   Data Centers Artificial intelligence needs data centers because the models are too large and complex to run on ordinary computers. Data centers provide the specialized GPUs, storage, and networking required for model training and inference. All of this hardware consumes large amounts of electricity to function.  On top of that, cooling systems are needed to keep servers from overheating, which adds even more power use. As AI adoption grows, so does the electricity demand tied to expanding data center capacity. AI’s Growing Share of Data Center Capacity In 2025, artificial intelligence is already projected to consume more data center capacity than all other workloads combined—44 gigawatts versus 38 gigawatts. That gives AI a 54% share of total capacity.
