Crime 101 was easily one of my most anticipated 2026 movie releases because of one name. And it wasn't Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, or Corey Hawkins (though they all star). I'm talking about writer/director Bart Layton. This English filmmaker made two mind-bending true crime films back to back that not only shaped the way I look at the genre, but the way I look at the world.  SEE ALSO: 2026 movie preview: All the films you need to know about right now The first was the 2012 documentary The Imposter, which told the stranger-than-fiction story of a French con artist who stole the identity of a long-lost Texas teenager, fooling authorities and the boy's family for an alarming span of time. There, Layton interviewed both the family and the con man, exposing conflicting stories and urging the audience to find the truth for themselves. Then came 2018's American Animals.Blending documentary and narrative drama, Layton unfurled the bizarre story of four college students who tried their hand at a heist inspired by their favorite movies. Layton cast dynamic actors like Keoghan and Evan Peters to play these wannabe Reservoir Dogs. He also worked with the real-life thieves, both in talking-head interviews and by interjecting them next to their fictional counterparts, breaking the fourth wall to reflect on their memories and emotions in moments from their lives as portrayed onscreen. Both films present charismatic criminals whose charms are impossible to ignore. Then, both films complicate the audiences' feelings for these rogues by capturing the devastation left in their wake. So, though I'd never read the Don Winslow novella on which Crime 101 is built, I was champing at the bit to see what Layton would do next. What he's done is craft a competent crime thriller, shining with star power and splashy big-budget action sequences. But there's something missing. Crime 101 is a tale of a thief on a crime spree.  Credit: Merrick Morton / Amazon MGM Studios Hemsworth stars as a modern bandit who pulls off a string of heists along Los Angeles' 101 freeway. His crimes are meticulously researched, finding the weak point in deliveries of diamonds and cash. He leaves behind no clues to his identity (thanks to a mask and colored contacts), and he's committed to leaving no victims physically injured. With so many thefts in L.A., most cops don't see the connection between his crimes. But for LAPD Detective Lou Lubesnick (Ruffalo), the pattern is clear. Rather than focusing solely on the cat-and-mouse game between the thief, named Mike, and the detective, Crime 101 bounces from each of their arcs — which respectively include a new girlfriend and a gutting divorce — as well as two other figures who get pulled into the thief's plans. The first is Sharon Colvin (Berry), a 53-year-old insurance broker who's hitting the glass ceiling at her posh but bro-y office. Sure, when this dashing thief suggests he give her intel in exchange for a life-changing cut of the loot, she's initially dismissive. But soon enough, they're in cahoots. And they're being watched. Keoghan — who, between American Animals, Saltburn, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, has been upping his intimidation game — plays a hotheaded young thief called Ormon, sporting bleach-blond hair as he rides a cacophonic motorcycle. With a big payday in sight, Crime 101 follows each thread to a dramatic conclusion that's likely to please thriller fans. Here, the American actor is more the crumpled but earnest cop from David Fincher's Zodiac, but minus the self confidence. Lou has the demeanor of a kicked street dog: guarded, alert, but hopeful for a change of fortune. Instead, Mike is more in line with his role in Michael Mann's Blackhat. Stoic and subdued, Mike has a hint of social awkwardness, because he's always masking to some degree to protect himself. Intellectually, this is an interesting contrast, especially to Berry's emotional broker and Keoghan's impulsive punk. However, this muted performance means Mike comes across pretty flat onscreen. But Layton doesn't offer another dynamically charming rogue to toy with our heads and hearts. He offers a sullen hunk with a tragic backstory that gives context for his criminal path. One uses a code of conduct to attempt to lessen the negative impact of his crimes; the other is a disaster waiting to happen. Where Hemsworth has the broad shoulders, height, and strong jaw of a standard Hollywood leading man, Keoghan has a mug that oozes with snarls, snarks, and spit as his Ormon unleashes on frightened bank tellers, quivering customers, and even a crying baby. Their contrast follows the thread of Layton's past explorations of the allure of the criminal. One, played by Hemsworth, is the fantasy, a thief who is handsome, smart, non-violent, and only robs from the rich (or the well-insured). Keoghan is the nightmare, a mercurial smash-and-grab robber who counts violence as a necessary tool, and has no qualms about who he harms or how. However, this contrast sets Mike up as an almost Robin Hood-like figure, minimizing the harm he's done by suggesting it could be worse. He could be Ormon. Undoubtedly, Crime 101 is a slick and successful crime thriller. Layton has cleverly cast big names who do well with their roles. The twists of the story are enough to keep audiences on their toes. The car chases are stellar stuff, recalling the cramped intensity of The Bourne Identity over the glossy, gonzo action of Fast and Furious movies. There's a slow-burning sex appeal between various stars, though centered around Berry. Layton's painting of L.A. is rich in neon lights against dark nights, evoking a sense of danger even in mellower sequences. But rather than feeling like Layton is upping his game, bringing bigger names to his unique brand of nuanced and enthralling storytelling, Crime 101 feels like he's showing Hollywood he knows how to play by their rules. The movie works fine, but it doesn't hit as hard or linger in my mind the way The Imposter and American Animals did. I'm hopeful next time, Layton won't play nice. Crime 101 opens in theaters Feb. 13.

Ring and surveillance company Flock Safety have cancelled their partnership, which planned to make it easier for police to access footage from users' personal cameras. This comes less than a week after Ring's widely criticised Super Bowl ad drew further attention to the concerning privacy implications of its home security system. "As a result, we have made the joint decision to cancel the planned integration. The integration never launched, so no Ring customer videos were ever sent to Flock Safety."Though Ring states that resource issues are to blame for the partnership's cancellation, its collaboration with Flock Safety has been the subject of significant criticism regarding privacy and surveillance concerns. Distrust toward the Amazon-owned surveillance camera company has escalated, with users reportedly disconnecting, destroying, or returning their Ring devices. Some have also specifically cited Flock Safety's use by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).News of the partnership's cancellation closely follows Ring's poorly received Super Bowl ad, which promoted its AI-powered Search Party feature. Advertised as a tool for finding lost pets, Search Party allows people to upload a photo of their dog so that Ring can search their neighbours' camera footage for the animal using AI detection. Concerned viewers quickly pointed out that this technology could very easily be used to track humans as well. Ring introduced facial recognition to its devices late last year, the Electronic Frontier Foundation stating that the feature could potentially violate people's right to privacy.Why Ring and Flock Safety's partnership raised privacy concernsAnnounced last October, Ring and Flock Safety's partnership was promoted as a tool for users to "help solve crime in [their] community." Police would be able to request Ring camera video directly from users, which Flock Safety would send straight to them once approved. Flock Safety has stated that it is partnered with over 5,000 law enforcement agencies."When local public safety officers are investigating an active case, local officers using Flock Safety's technology can now post a request directly in the Ring Neighbors app asking for help," Flock wrote in a blog post at the time. "If you decide to share, Flock's system securely delivers your video directly to the public safety agency handling the case."The planned partnership was met by backlash when initially unveiled, with critics noting that the Flock Safety's services and data have been used by agencies such as the U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP) and ICE. 404 Media reported last May that while Flock was not in direct contact with ICE, the agency still accessed its services and data via requests from local law enforcement. Flock has since confirmed this, stating that though it does not have a direct partnership with ICE, the agency can still access it through a "local customer." The company has also admitted to working directly with CBP.Further, Ring has had a historically close relationship with law enforcement as well. A 2019 report from Motherboard revealed that Ring had secret deals with dozens of U.S. police departments, providing free products and a private portal for requesting footage without a warrant. In exchange, law enforcement officers agreed to promote Ring to their local community.As of 2020, 2,014 government agencies were able to access Ring's camera surveillance network via its Neighbors Portal program. Agencies submitted Ring footage requests for over 22,335 incidents that year, over half of which were approved. Then in 2022, Amazon admitted that it had sent Ring camera footage to the police without users' knowledge or consent.Ring did axe its Request for Assistance feature in 2024, which had allowed police to request camera footage from users and kept a public record of it (though private requests could still be made). However, it returned to its focus on providing law enforcement with users' videos last year, allowing police to request footage via taser-maker Axon's evidence management system.

The original God of War trilogy is getting a remake over 15 years after it ended. Developer Santa Monica Studio announced the project on Thursday during PlayStation's State of Play showcase.Very little has been revealed about the God of War remake aside from its existence. However, it does appear as though original voice actor Terrence C. Carson is returning for the game. Carson voiced protagonist Kratos in the original God of War trilogy, and appeared during the remake announcement. "But I'm telling you, I'm telling you, next time we come back, we coming with something big, baby." Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise, with God of War first released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The game followed Kratos, a Spartan warrior who served the Greek pantheon, as he embarked on a revenge quest to kill the titular god Ares. The subsequent two games also kept Kratos on a mission of revenge, turning his blades toward the king of the gods Zeus.All three titles in the God of War trilogy were well-received at the time of their release, widely praised for their brutal, fluid combat. However, other aspects of the games have not aged quite as well, having treated women as sexual objects to be bedded in minigames and then discarded. In one infamous incident in God of War III, Kratos used an enslaved, half-naked woman as a literal object to solve a puzzle, leaving her screaming as she was crushed to death. It's currently unclear how the God of War remake might tackle such issues, particularly as the original games are well-known for their highly sexualised depiction of women. The series successfully retooled its approach more recently in a soft reboot, which delivered satisfyingly powerful combat alongside a markedly more mature, evolved, and nuanced approach to both women and masculinity. Even so, 2018's God of War and its follow-up God of War Ragnarök had the benefit of being able to tell new stories, rather than remaking games that fans are already familiar with. The remake wasn't the only God of War news to drop during Thursday's State of Play, with PlayStation also giving a surprise announcement and release of new 2D action platformer God of War Sons of Sparta. Developed by Mega Cat Studios with writers from Santa Monica Studio, Sons of Sparta is a prequel to the God of War series, and follows a young Kratos who's still in training alongside his brother. The side-scrolling game features retro-style pixel graphics with Carson narrating as Kratos, reprising the role for the first time since God of War: Ascension in 2013.
