Market Maker

Investment firms that offer contracts for difference (CFD) or currencies (FX, Forex) for trading hardly differ from each other externally. The situation is different when it comes to the scope of the licence, i.e. the regulatory aspects that define the way in which a financial service provider can offer its services. It is not uncommon for the term market maker to be appropriated for the entire industry. However, this is only true for those companies that are allowed to engage in proprietary trading (dealing on own account) and thus operate their trading book (A/B). The higher-value licence goes hand in hand with higher capital requirements. In terms of personnel, these companies are also positioned differently than financial service providers with a minor licence. The latter like to make a virtue of necessity and classify themselves as STP or ECN brokers and thus as transparent and free of conflicts of interest.
